Park and Ride Solitaire

Park and Ride Solitaire

1. Executive Summary & Game Overview

Park and Ride Solitaire is an engaging, highly strategic, and smooth-flowing variant of the classic Montana (also known as Addiction or Gaps) family of Solitaire card games. Designed for puzzle enthusiasts, strategy card players, and casual gamers looking for a fresh spin on traditional card patience games, Park and Ride Solitaire replaces standard column-building mechanics with a dynamic spatial grid-management challenge.

In standard Klondike or FreeCell solitaire, players build alternating color stacks or move cards to top foundation piles. Park and Ride Solitaire flips this formula entirely: the entire standard 52-card deck is dealt out into four distinct rows of 13 cards each. The four Aces are then immediately removed, leaving behind four strategic empty spaces—referred to as Parking Spots or Gaps. Players must shift non-Ace cards across these empty spots to rearrange the entire grid into four completed horizontal highways, sorting each row by suit in ascending numerical order from 2 through King.

Known as a slightly more forgiving and balanced cousin of Free Parking Solitaire, Park and Ride Solitaire provides players with two strategic board reshuffles per game round. This crucial feature reduces unplayable "dead-end" states, turning what could be a punishing logic puzzle into a deeply satisfying game of spatial planning, foresight, and tactical board control.

3. Detailed How-to-Play Instructions

3.1 Initial Setup & Layout

  1. The Deal: A standard 52-card deck (without Jokers) is shuffled and dealt face-up into a 4x13 rectangular grid consisting of 4 horizontal rows and 13 vertical columns.
  2. Removing the Aces: All four Aces (♠, ♥, ♦, ♣) are extracted from the grid and removed from play.
  3. Creation of Parking Spots: Removing the Aces creates four empty spaces (the "Park and Ride" slots) randomly distributed across the 52-cell board.
